Simon Davies launched Radius Windshields in February 2023 with a mission to apply his extensive knowledge and expertise to invent the best microphone shock mounts and windshields that the market could offer.

Simon’s interest in sound recording and windshields started at the early age of 14. At that time, his mum Vivienne was one of the first employees at Rycote Microphone Windshields and worked closely with  the founder of Rycote, John Gozzard.  This had allowed Simon to visit the factory often and learn about microphones and audio accessories from Mr. Gozzard and the team. In 1994 Vivienne assumed full ownership of Rycote from Mr Gozzard with the view to expand the company.

In 1997, Simon joined Rycote as a full-time employee as a production engineer following his training as a location sound recordist with the BBC. His innovative and creative mindset was soon recognized and shortly after he was promoted to the position of Technical Innovation Director. In 2013, Simon took over full ownership and management of Rycote with his wife Odette. Having expanded the company into a thriving business catering to a global clientele Simon sold Ryocote in 2018.

Although Simon had sold Rycote, he continued to discover solutions and new ideas for creating  new and improved versions of shock mounts and audio accessories that were available on the market.

In 2023, Simon and Odette decided to launch Radius so they could turn these new products into reality.  Their three children Ryan, Megan and Molly have followed Simon’s footsteps and are also working at Radius. Simon has always considered his employees as part of his family and with that comes loyalty - after the new owners of Rycote decided to close the old factory located in Stroud, U.K. -- five former employees from Rycote joined Radius to bring their experience in making audio products.

Pioneer of Audio Accessories

Over the past 35 years, Simon Davies and his family have created and introduced innovative products to the audio recording and broadcasting industry. Many of their products have become the “must haves” of audio recordists and are now widely recognized as the industry standard.

Such creations include:

  • Synthetic fur covers for windshield blimps to reduce wind noise;

  • A core of foam on the inside covered with fur that slides onto the end of a microphone, universally known as “the deadcat”;

  • Synthetic fur windshields specifically to fit portable recorders;

  • Modern windshield blimps with interchangeable parts for different sized microphones;

  • Universal plastics mic shock mount to replace those microphone shock mounts that used rubber bands; and

  • Lavalier mic adhesive stickers and fur covers for hiding microphones under clothing.
